Big Butterfly Count and National Moth night.

The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapdily become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. An impressive 25,500 people took part in 2012, counting 223,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK (see the 2012 results).

It will take place this year between 20th July and 11th August and we are asking everybody who can visit our woods during that time to take part. Details of the event, organised by Butterfly Conservation, can be viewed  and the form downloaded here.

As well as sending in your sightings to Butterfly Conservation we would be grateful if you could also let us know by making comments or posts on this website. Thanks.

Lime Hawk-moth caught this week alongside the wood.

Also this year's Moth Night, organised by Atropos and Butterfly Conservation  will be held on a suitable night between 8th and 10th August. We shall be supporting this event here at Troserch Woods by setting up a number of moth traps (the moths are released unharmed afterwards) within the woods and recording our catches. It will be an evening event starting around dusk and going on into the night for a few hours. Everyone is welcome to come along to see what is going on and get involved.

More details about both these events will be supplied nearer the time so make a note in your diaries.

  3. Hi Colin will be doing butterfly count around my area a few times. In our Garden and across the way on the common near our house in Grovesend. Will do one at the woods if I have the time.
