Strange bee in the woods
This strange bee was seen in the woods recently and has now been identified as an Ashy Mining Bee (Andrena cineraria). A spring-flying solitary bee that has been showing a marked increase in abundance of late. The nests are constructed in the ground and the excavated spoil is shown in the photo.
The bees are non-aggressive and safe with children.
Believe it or not there are nearly 300 different types of bee in the UK!
